Day 9 - Keld to Reeth
The route today promised to be a much more gentle day than any previous. Again, there was a choice of high or low route but with little difference in difficulty. We decided on the lower route as it would take us through some of the pretty villages and hamlets overlooking the Swale.
Distance today 13.6 miles
Total distance so far - 118 miles!
Keld
The meeting point of the C2C with the Pennine Way just below Keld.
After leaving our accommodation in Angram, we rejoined the route at Keld and walked an undulating route initially passing one of the disused lead mines at the derelict Crackpot Hall.
The view back up to the moors above Keld.
A half buried tractor at the entrance to one of the abandoned lead mines
Old lead mine above Crackpot Hall with lovely views down Swaledale.

All the stiles seem very narrow and have gates! Making it quite complicated to get through
The route generally went parallel with the river for most of the day.
A flotilla of Mallard chicks with mum!
Our coffee spot. The water level obviously comes up to the tree branches when the levels are high as we could see river detritus caught in the twigs!
We stopped at the busy Ghyllend cafe in Gunnerside for a soup lunch and coffee before climbing steeply to moorland listening once again to Curlew and Lapwing
Such beautiful views down Swaledale with dry stone walls dividing the fields.
Finally we walked through Blades and dropped down to walk along the river to arrive at Reeth with its large green.
First swallow of summer
Reeth - It’s a charming village with several pubs and tea rooms!!

ReplyDeleteMuch love to you both TTXX
Thanks Teresa!! Sally xxx
ReplyDeleteVery envious of your walk through Swaledale. Michael and I had a wonderful time there ourselves staying at Castle Bolton a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely place to be - will you do Harkerside? We’ve had a couple of super breaks walking in that area - and you seem to have organized the weather. Happy anniversary!! Jane xx
