Day 3 - Rosthwaite to Grasmere

Image
When the forecast says 95% chance of double raindrops....it means it!!!! Distance today 8.8 miles Total distance so far 43.7 miles Leaving Rosthwaite The day had started promisingly with great views towards Scafell though the clouds were already menacing and the wind was gusting. Looking towards Greenup Edge which we have to cross later today!  Within a few kilometres and by the time we started the steep ascent to Lining Crag the rain had started with a vengeance. Nearly there! Keep going! Made it to the top! Shame the view isn’t so great Beyond Greenup Edge, we started the long and occasionally boggy descent to Grasmere. The route is easier to follow where the rock screes are visible but in heavy rain, these quickly become streams.  Looking back up the valley Nearly in Grasmere!! Hurrah! The heavy rain continued to fall and by the time we arrived at our accommodation, we were wet through. With the radiators turned to full blast, our clothing was festooned across the ro...

Fabulous views before crossing the ridge and descending into Borrowdale and a welcoming pint in the sun at the Royal Oak in Rosthwaite. Distance today 15.6 miles Total distance so far 34.9 miles A short walk up from Ennerdale Bridge, we arrived at the shores of Ennerdale Water. Looking West (from whence we came)….. …and looking East for what was awaiting us!!!!!! At the end of Ennerdale Water - one last look Westwards After a couple of hours, it was time to find a sheltered spot, under the trees, dig out the coffee flask and enjoy the view. Then on, alongside the River Liza to Black Sail Hut, with fabulous views toward Scoat Fell, Caw Fell and Lank Rigg. On the steep climb up Loft Beck, a ‘momentary’ stop to allow a very tall Dutch volleyball team to overtake us. With th...

Panorama from the top of Dent - stunning views Made it to the top!! After a LONG steep descent off The Dent, we found a lovely, sheltered spot for our picnic lunch by the Nannycatch Beck!! ….recharged, we continued on down to a warm welcome and revitalising pint at The Fox and Hounds at Ennerdale Bridge.
