Day 2 Ennerdale to Rosthwaite


We started with a walk along the shores of Ennerdale Water, then rising gradually through Ennerdale Forest up to Blacksail Hut before a steep slog to 2000 feet in the shadow of Hay Stacks looking across at Great Gable. Fabulous views before crossing the ridge and descending into Borrowdale and a welcoming pint in the sun at the Royal Oak in Rosthwaite.

Total distance so far 34.9 miles

A short walk up from Ennerdale Bridge, we arrived at the shores of Ennerdale Water.

At the end of Ennerdale Water - one last look Westwards

After a couple of hours, it was time to find a sheltered spot, under the trees, dig out the coffee flask and enjoy the view.



Then on, alongside the River Liza to Black Sail Hut,


with fabulous views toward Scoat Fell, Caw Fell and Lank Rigg.

On the steep climb up Loft Beck, a ‘momentary’ stop to allow a very tall Dutch volleyball team to overtake us.

With the coast safely clear of marauding Dutchmen, we plugged on to the top - 2000 feet.

  Distance today 13.9 miles Total distance so far 189.9 Another magnificent day of perfect weather.  We really have been so lucky.  We set off from the Lion Inn across the top of the moor. A way marker intriguingly called ‘Fat Betty’ The views were magnificent in all directions with Curlew and Lapwing calling along the way. Day 16 - Grosmont to Robin Hoods Bay

Distance today 15 miles Total distance coast to coast 205 miles!!! Yesterday, we'd walked 4 miles beyond our intended accommodation in Glaisdale to reach Grosmont so as to reduce the rather intimidating length of the final day's walk - the arrangement being, that after breakfast, our hosts would give us a lift back to rejoin the trail to restart the final day at Grosmont. Having last night, 'exchanged views' with our host (a mad-keen motorbiker) on the rights and WRONGS of allowing scrambling motorbikes' access to Britain's precious "green lanes" we have to admit to some nervousness as to whether the offer of the morning lift would still be honoured. Well!!! Better than that, we were given a lift - not only to Grosmont but also to the top of the 1 mile long, 1 in 3 incline from the centre of Grosmont so that we were able to start our final day - fueled with porridge and as fresh as daisies!!!
