Day 15 - Blakey Ridge to Grosmont

 Distance today 13.9 miles

Total distance so far 189.9

Another magnificent day of perfect weather.  We really have been so lucky.  We set off from the Lion Inn across the top of the moor.

A way marker intriguingly called ‘Fat Betty’

The views were magnificent in all directions with Curlew and Lapwing calling along the way.

The view from our coffee spot down into the lush green valley of Great Fryupdale discouraged us from any thoughts of rushing on

Walking down off Glaisdale Moor

The warmth today brought this adder out to bask in the sun. He must have slumbering because we managed to get this close before he slithered back into the heather.

The views of the sea in the distance became clearer and though we were enjoying glorious sunshine, we could see a har (sea mist) blowing in to Robin Hoods Bay - verified by the met office forecast!!

We were passed by a group of about 30 vintage vespas on a charity ride and on seeing us hiking, keen to wave in mutual encouragement!

Throughout the day, the trail gradually descended from the moor

The lovely view from our lunch spot overlooking a pond busy with tadpoles and newts.

The paupers bridge in Glaisdale celebrates Thomas Ferris who sailed to sea from Hull to join Sir Francis Drake’s fleet to see off the Spanish Armada. Apparently, he left as a pauper and returned four years later a rich man!!

Glaisdale is on the gentle River Esk.

David chose to walk through the ford

The beautiful St Hedda’s church in Egton Bridge.

Finally we crossed the bridge into Grosmont before having a pint at the Station Tavern. Grosmont is a hub on the North Yorks Steam Railway- and sitting in the sun outside the Station Tavern on this glorious Saturday afternoon was definitely a popular thing to do.
