Day 10 - Reeth to Richmond

Distance today 11.5 miles

Total distance so far 129.5 miles

A very relaxed start to a Bank Holiday Monday.

We stopped off at the town corner shop to buy some postcards before heading out of town to a road bridge over the River Swale and then a gentle path along the river where we had a chat with a fisherman who shared his expertise on matching the bait to the weather conditions and whether to use fly or worm!!!!

Watching the Greylag Geese land in the fields by the river.

Just past Marrick Priory we climbed up through Steps Wood on a footpath paved with large limestone slabs.

At Nun Cote Nook we noticed that the roofing materials on some of the old buildings were slate rather than the limestone slabs we'd seen up until now higher up Swaldale.

Also a change in the prevailing breed of sheep from Swaledale to Texel.(that’s the ugly miserable looking one on the left)

At Hardstiles Top in the sunshine,  we took shelter behind a wall and enjoyed a picnic lunch while looking out over the gentle rolling hills.

After a steep descent into Marske we called in to St Edmund the Martyr's Church just before the heavens opened for half an hour.

…so out came the rain jacket and poncho which did the job admirably.

At Applegath Wood we came upon a Triumph Spitfire that had clearly seen better days and then through Whitecliffe Wood before Richmond Castle Hove into view and we arrived into the attractive streets of the town.

After a week of pub grub, Richmond is an ideal town to sample some 'fine dining' so we pushed the boat out and went to Rustique, a French restaurant. Delicious it was too.

Then home to our accommodation via the attractive town square in the shadow of Richmond Castle - reputedly the finest Norman Castle in the UK.
