Day 0 - St Bees

Coast to Coast - Day 0 - 6.2 miles

St Bees Coast Path circuit

After travelling by bus-replacement service from Hexham with glimpses of Hadrian’s Wall along the way, we arrived in St Bees in glorious sunshine. Realising that   the first 6 miles of the route initially follows the coast and then curves back to a point close to St Bees, we decided to walk this loop today and thus make tomorrow our official start day and tomorrow’s leg rather shorter!!!

We walked down to the beach for the traditionsl dipping of toes in the Cumbrian waves and to select a pebble to carry across ‘to the other side’   The Coast to Coast is a 190 mile walk first done by Alfred Wainwright in 1973.  We are looking forward to following in his footsteps!

Here we are dipping our toes into the Irish Sea and selecting a stone to take with us on our walk!!

The views from the cliffs to the North to Scotland, to the West to the Isle of Man and to the South are all spectacular. The sea birds were wheeling on the breeze, the cormorants diving and we saw kestrel snd buzzards hunting.  The bluebells, gorse and celendine gave beautiful contrast to the red cliffs, the green grass and the blue sea! Gorgeous!!
